Being a college student isn't a license to carelessly ravage through raw materials, but we also can't expect a 19 year old to buy an heirloom set of furniture that they intend to keep for the rest of their days on earth. There has to be a better way to accomodate the transient lifestyle of a student while reducing the volume of furniture that they consume.
Disposable coffee cups are responsible for the deaths of over 6.5 million trees each year! In 2006 it is estimated that 16 billion of these beasts found their way into the trash creating over 250 million pounds of solid waste. No need to fear, these little short lived monsters can easily be stopped by the use of a simple household item... a REUSABLE coffee mug.
The San Fransicso "Save the Bay" group has waged war on plastic bags in a campaign called "The Bay vs. The Bag," while some feel it's a fight not worth fighting... We do need to be careful not to placate our environmentalism with narrow easy wins, but we can't be elitists that scoff at legitimate causes because they are "too small."
As the US economy continues to slow, our demand for Chinese goods diminishes and China’s demand for the world’s recyclables, used to produce some of these goods, has subsequently diminished. Now our trash is stuck on our shores!
