Who wouldn’t like a chair called “Let’s Grow Some Balls”? This cool design is by Doreen Westphal of Krejci. I love it’s two fold environmental aspects of being made from recycled plastic and housing plants. Another green aspect to the chair is that you don’t have to get rid of it when you tire of it’s style and design. Instead, you can just replant and give the chair an entirely different feel.

When there’s something in the house that starts to look a little ragged, it’s hard to resist the call of IKEA. It’s so easy to hit up that Swedish wonderland and replace an aging piece on the cheap. Laurent Corio designed this new take on an old piece of furniture. The trestle legs, reminiscent of a saw horse, give this old table a whole new aura. Australian artists Peter Cook (Pook) and Becky Northey shape living trees into sculptures, growing chairs and tables and mirror frames, even candelabras and people trees. Their partnership, Pooktre Tree Shapers, uses wild plum and black cherry for their art, which takes as long as 8 to 10 years to grow for the bigger pieces.

Living in the city I see discarded mattresses out on the curb every week. They are difficult to recycle, create a large amount of waste, and no one wants to use someone else’s old mattress. Frank Willems has created funky furniture by bending and folding mattress into usable forms.

Counter Evolution out of NYC is scavenging discarded bowling alley lane wood and crafting heavy duty tables, chairs, and bars. The gloriously finished wood was milled over a century ago in some cases and has amazing character.
