Upcycled Pallet Made Furniture By Studiomama

pallet lamp

A few weeks ago we posted on pallet made disaster relief homes. We’ve found the perfect adornments for the pallet house (in terms of style and material anyway) with Nina Tolstrup and her Studiomama Pallet Furniture. Desinged for the “10, Ten, X Project” Nina uses simple pallets and screws as her base material. The Pallet Chair Lo is an Adirondack style seat, the Pallet Lights come as a standing floor model or a block light meant for table tops, and her pallet stools come as simple four legged version or a block of pallet pieces. She also sells assembly instructions if you wish to make your own pallet furniture. All you need is anything from part of a pallet to two full pallets and you can make your own for nearly pennies. The designs are appealing with their contrasting simple elegance and rough materials. Check out more of her work after the break…

Bilge Lounge - Reclaimed Barrel and Truck Springs

image

Uhuru, like the Shakers, believe “beauty rests on utility.” Their work aims towards sustainability, lasting appeal, and quality. The Bilge Lounge is a chair constructed from reclaimed bourbon barrels and the spring suspension leafs from used trucks. The barrels are used only once for aging, after being roasted to a brown hue to imbue flavor in the bourbon, in Bardstown Kentucky before they have reached the end of their life for this purpose. Uhuru’s Kupe Line has put this wood to further good in the form of elegant and character rich furniture. Uhuru as a company works towards eliminating waste from their production methods and being acutely aware of reusable resources that can be locally procured.

Frank Gehry’s Wiggle Cardboard Furniture

image

These reproductions from Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges furniture project (1969–73) are sturdy pieces made from recycled corrugated cardboard with lacquered side panels.  The Guggenheim reflects on Gehry’s furniture:

Gehry’s furniture designs are a “quick fix” of his architectural practice: their realization is relatively immediate and low cost, and they provide a satisfying smaller forum in which various design concerns, including ones relating to his buildings, may be explored.

“Low Cost” maybe in comparison to his buildings, but even these reproductions will set you back a pretty penny ($920 for the chair and $498 for the stool).  Not for everybody, these cardboard cutouts would be a good choice for a Mid-century Modernist with some Green to spend.  They are more eco-friendly than many of the periods alternatives… made from recycled material and biodegradable, although at $1000 a chair I cringe to think of it biodegrading.

The Perfect Perch Portable Eco-friendly Seat

image

James Chu set out to design portable, cheap, lightweight and eco-friendly furniture, and he came up with the Perfect Perch.  The Perfect Perch is made out of of double-wall corrugated cardboard and covered in an eco-friendly UV varnish for water-resistance.  The Perch folds up flat or can be used as a bag, then simply stop, pop, and perch to rest your weary legs.  Chu envisions them as an effective and functional marketing tool…

Somewhere like Goodwood Racecourse could commission 1,000 carrying their name or a sponsor’s message and people could use them at the racecourse and then take them home afterwards. They would make excellent souvenirs.

These would be great for events like road races, golf tournaments, fairs…  The Perfect Perch is currently in production but there’s no word on when they will be available to the public.  We’ll keep you posted.  [via: Notcot]

When I first saw this product I thought “Is that a chair, or am I having another acid flashback?” The Terra Grass Chair is a true DIY lawn job. After constructing the base frame let mother earth do the rest. This product is a creative and fun way to enjoy your backyard or create outdoor theatre seating for the neighborhood. Simply pile some dirt, seed, and water over the 3D contour scaffolding and challenge little Timmy to haul the mower over these little guys. What better way to minimize the use of cheap and ugly lawn furniture.
