Greener Gadgets: Environmental Traffic Light

Hernando Barragan has entered his Social-environmental Station into this years Greener Gadgets Design Competition. The idea is to display current environmental conditions that are usually ignored or not well understood. Factors such as parts per million CO2 in the air will be as commonly understood as the temperature.

The idea is to set up monitoring stations that resemble common traffic signals, a symbol and format the public is comfortable with. Independent sensors will records, transmit, and display reading such as CO2 in ppm, humidity, air pressure, and other indicators that could be useful in understanding the state of our ecosystems. The information could be used for further study and the Environmental Lights could be constructed in a variety of locations, from parks to busy streets.

Perhaps, some day, this information will be integrated into people daily routine. They might think, “Hmmm, the CO2 reading was high this morning down the street, maybe I don’t need the AC on during the commute.” These information feedback systems forces these issues into our everyday life.
