Reclaimed, Restored, Recycled Bowling Lanes

counter evolution

Counter Evolution out of NYC is scavenging discarded bowling alley lane wood and crafting heavy duty tables, chairs, and bars. The gloriously finished wood was milled over a century ago in some cases and has amazing character.

Counter Evolution is a very new company (2007) and was started by musician and avid wood worker Jim Malone. After building a log cabin home in Upstate New York Jim began the business to make “contemporary Green furniture and eco-conscious installations made exclusively from reclaimed wood from bowling lanes.”

Using only pre-1980 lanes (to ensure 100% wood content, newer lanes contain fiber glass and other materials) Jim has created a line of products from Modern Rustic 100% green, to Industrial Green benches and tables reinforced with steel I-beams, to Reclaimed Cafe great for bars, restaurants, lounges, or the home. Using reclaimed wood cuts down (no pun intended) on the destruction of our forests, the energy needed to harvest and mill new wood, saves milled wood from being burned, but most of all “is the way it looks and feels—the beauty and character of the old wood, and the signs of its former life, only add to its richness.”

About the Author:

Doug is in perpetual motion and a self-proclaimed adventure junkie, that has had a longtime love affair with the great outdoors.

“I love being a part of the active world. The stuff that blows my hair back is adventure (all shapes and sizes), photography, mountaineering, Muay Thai, and seeing natural beauty in all its forms. The living earth is the framework on which I build my life and free time. My ideal trip would be BASE jumping at Sotano de Las Golandrinas in Mexico (closest I could come to skydiving through the jungle!). I work towards keeping it real, green, and healthy. ”

Doug is the co-founder of LiveOAK, although he says he didn’t know what a blog was until a couple months after he started.

What a great way to reuse old lanes. Would be excellent for anyone who loves beautiful wood, or the Big Lebowski
