Homemade, sulfate-free shampoos might need a little recipe-tweaking in the dry winter months.
Back in August we talked about going no 'poo. If you missed the first post about it, no 'poo is a hair care regiment that's shampoo free. The most common practice is to wash your hair with a baking soda solution and use diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) to condition. It's all natural, inexpensive, and once you find the right balance of baking soda and ACV, it leaves your hair feeling great! If you want some more information on the no 'poo basics, check out the original post for deets.
Now that the weather is getting all cold and dry, your scalp might need some extra love. Here are some tips to help you keep up the no 'poo through the winter months.
Commenter Susan had a couple of great suggestions for scalp treatments:
I added a little brown sugar and some honey to keep from drying my scalp. It is excellent. My hair feels so clean and is very shiny. I used molasses and conditioner to do a deep moisturizing treatment. It turned out Very nice!!!
You can bet that I'll be adding a little brown sugar and agave nectar to my next batch of baking soda!
I've also read that a few drops of essential oil like rosemary or lavender in your ACV solution can help sooth an angry scalp. You might also try grapefruit oil.
Over at Splendicity City they recommend steeping some mint or thyme in hot water and massaging your scalp with the tea.
If you're wanting to do a deep treatment, try massaging your scalp with coconut or olive oil before washing your hair. Just let the oil sit for a few minutes so your scalp can absorb the moisture. You can use the oil at room temperature or warmed slightly in the microwave. If you do heat the oil, be very, very careful. Before applying to your scalp, test it on the inside of your arm (like you would test a baby's bottle) to make sure it's not too hot. You don't want to burn yourself! Don't apply it to your head directly - rub the oil on your hands, then massage into your scalp.
So how's it going, fellow no 'poo-ers? Any success stories you'd like to share? Are you running into any snags? We'd love to hear about your experiences!

GREAT INFO WILL ADD THAT TO MY REGIMEN
I would love to try this, but I have had to use medicated shampoo because of Dermatitis. Are there any natural solutions to special needs like this?
Good question, Elise!
My scalp gets very dry in winter and sometimes a little itchy, but nothing severe. Since changing my wash mixture to 1 part baking soda, 1 part brown sugar, 1 part honey, 1 part water, my hair and scalp have been great! That said, I would hate to steer you in the wrong direction…you’d definitely want to run any changes in your hair care routine past your doctor.
Thanks for the info. As a “curly girl” I gave up shampoo completely about 5 years ago & after a period of pestering my family with “smell my hair – does it smell bad?” LOL!! I haven’t looked back since!! I do still condition with a tea tree oil based conditioner though… I will have to give the honey & brown sugar thing a whirl – Thanks again!!
This post was interesting. I am looking forward for your next post. Lulu Dewald @ H
