We are a new media company publishing websites that focus on energy, the environment and sustainable living. By leading the conversation about green issues, LiveOAK aims to advance the principles of sustainability by making them meaningful and accessible to a mainstream audience.
A couple days ago we wrote about Mottainai Furoshiki, the use of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth as a sustainable alternative to disposable bags, wrapping paper, you name it... We loved this idea so much we started using it right away. We made this video to show how easy and fun it is...
The thing I love most about this is that you don't have to carry a bag around with you. You simply incorporate this into your outfit and you are always prepared for the impromptu stop at the store, or the library.
Another great use is as an alternative to wrapping paper. Besides being more eco-friendly, it is a gift in and of it self. I will never buy wrapping paper again! I really hope that this catches on here in the US.
Doug is in perpetual motion and a self-proclaimed adventure junkie, that has had a longtime love affair with the great outdoors.
“I love being a part of the active world. The stuff that blows my hair back is adventure (all shapes and sizes), photography, mountaineering, Muay Thai, and seeing natural beauty in all its forms. The living earth is the framework on which I build my life and free time. My ideal trip would be BASE jumping at Sotano de Las Golandrinas in Mexico (closest I could come to skydiving through the jungle!). I work towards keeping it real, green, and healthy. ”
Doug is the co-founder of LiveOAK, although he says he didn’t know what a blog was until a couple months after he started.

I love this idea. Does anyone know, or have a guess as to how big that shawl is?

Hi Carissa,
Yes we used a 36″ x 36″ piece of fabric. I guess we should have put that in the post
Thanks!

Hey there, i see that you are very intersted in the practice of Furoshiki, if so come check out what I am doing to make this part of everyday practice in America to help reduce waste. http://www.furoshikibynara.
Not only can you shop here but it gives a complete history on the practice as well!

Good stuff and I’ll try to do my part to see that the idea spreads! Just say no to plastic bags and wrapping junk!
