Space Saving DIY Upside Down Herb Planters
Posted on July 28, 2009 by Matt Embrey in Yard+Garden
I was reading some comments on an organic gardening post in which apartment dweller were lamenting that they don’t have the room to garden. Don’t tell that to Mike Lieberman (@CanarsieBK), the force behind UrbanOrganicGardener.com. Actually, I’m sure he’d be happy to hear from you and he’d share some great tips, like these upsidedown hanging herb planters that he has hung on his fire escape.
All you need is a 2L soda bottle, some duct tape, a razor, a hole puncher, some thick twine or thin rope and a fire escape. If you are super short on space and don’t even have a fire escape, you could probably hang these out your windown or inside above your kitchen sink for example. Ideally you’d have rolling hills in your back yard and a bountiful 10 acre organic garden but that’s not a reality for most, so instead of waiting for an urban farm skyscraper for fresh local greens, make use of the space you have! Head over to Urban Organic Gardener for a tutorial on how to make your own hanging herb planter.

We’ve done something similar with a hanging fabric shoe rack from the thrift store, one herb in each pocket. Takes up next to no space and gets all the sun it needs. I like this idea a lot though, would be great for a school or camp activity.

Well the upside down versions failed (twice), so I went back to the drawing board and came up with this variation that’s worked nicely so far. http://www.urbanorganicgardener.com/2009/08/starting-a-hanging-herb-garden-using-recycled-soda-bottles/
