DIY Vertical Herb Garden with a Shoe Organizer

DIY Planters

Confounded by vegetable digging cats and toiling in the vegetable patch, Instructables member pippa5 came up with this cool vertical  solution.  In case you don’t recognize it, she used an old closet shoe organizer.  Meant to keep your shoes off the floor and save you some space, this new use saves some space by getting your veggies or herbs off the ground.

DIY Vertical Garden

It is similar to the reclaimed gutter vertical garden DIY we featured in April, but this one is even easier.  While this would go great on the side of a shed, I think this solution is perfect for people that have no yard at all.  Apartment dwellers could hang this on a balcony or in a patio, or even out the window!  You probably won’t be growing corn and squash in these repurposed planters, but from the looks of it, you should be able to get a pretty impressive herb growing.

I really want to try this. But just wondering, seems it might rot out pretty fast in the weather, esp. with all the dirt.

Does anyone have experience with that?

I have no fence area to hang it which would protect it form the rain. I like the idea lots.

  2. That is a great idea - I would never have thought of using a shoe-organizer for a vertical herb garden. This solution needs only little space (=good for my small garden), keeps most of the pest away and every plant gets enough light. Thanks for this tip.
