Green Daddy Bloggers for Father’s Day

Today we’d like to say Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there.  We’d also like to highlight some Green Daddy Bloggers.  There is a whole army of Mommy bloggers giving us tips about how to be good, green guardians, but Father’s writing on the same topic are a little harder to find.  Here’s are three paternally green sites worth reading and the dads the run them…

Natural Papa by Derek Markham

Besides writing for us, Derek is the co-publisher of Twilight Earth and Eco Tech Daily, a writer for Green Options and Natural Papa, where he writes about natural parenting (and some off topic posts like his frustration with AT&T customer service… I feel your pain Derek).

You can also find him on Twitter as @DerekMarkham and listen to his interview on Green Talk Radio.

Derek in his own words:

I’m a husband, a father, and a carrier of things.

I think peanut butter on anything is great.

I love big mountains and little kids, ’cause they make me smile, and I drink a double americano almost every day.

Things I dig include: simple living, natural fatherhood, attachment parenting, natural building, unassisted childbirth, bicycles, composting (sawdust) toilets, organic and biodynamic gardening, vegan peanut butter cookies with chocolate chips, and the blues.

We support local food production, starting with our own garden. We are also regulars at the farmers market and our local food co-op, buying in bulk for the best prices. The dream of the homestead is still alive for us and our self-sufficient zero-energy input green home is being planned. Our permaculture oasis is a sustainable small-scale village.
Single-speed bicycles, drumming, and DIY anything can really make me grin.

Green Dad’s Blog by Brian & Steven

Brian & Steven are a gay couple raising their adopted son Darius.  On Green Dads they chronicle their daily lives and their unique challenges and experiences as a non-traditional family.  But beyond that, they post on issues relevant to all parents concerned with raising their child to inherit a greener world.

You can also find them at Book Dads, a site for fathers that read with their kids, and on Twitter as @GreenDadsBlog.

Green Dads in their own words:

Who are the Green Dads? We’re Brian and Steven, two forty-something gay fathers together over 17 years, and our five year old son Darius. We think our family is just a typical American family like any other, despite being a gay, transracial, foster-adoptive family. Of course, not everyone sees it that way. What does our family believe in? We believe in Being Green, Science and Rationality, and Honoring Diversity. And of course having fun! This blog is a personal blog about our daily lives, and the universal challenges of parenting, especially in a non-traditional family.

Organic Green Daddy by Paul Davison

At Organic Green Daddy, Paul writes about ideas, products and resources geared towards dads who are trying to raise their kids in a sustainable world.  He also give his readers a voice by posting their stories about being Organic Green Daddies.

You can also find him on his wife Lauren’s site, Organic Green Mommy, where he is the producer of OGM TV.

Organic Green Daddy in Pauls words:

My vision is for Organic Green Daddy to be an online brotherhood of like-minded men trying to do their best at the most important job in the world.

From family men to single dads, there’s something for every guy, dude, or bro who wants their kids to live in a greener, safer, cleaner world.

More Green Dads:

I also want to give a “Happy Father’s Day” shout out to some of my green blogger/father friends…

Sean Daily, Shea Gunther, Michael d”Estries, Rob Reed and Chris Baskind were all featured in MNN’s 7 Great Green Daddy Blogs.

Also, Levi Novey, Adam Shake and Jeff McIntire-Strasburg.

Have a Happy Father’s Day, now I gotta go and call my Dad.

Thanks for the list, I’ve never seen any of those sites before. I read a lot of mommy blogs and it’s great to get a daddy perspective every once in a while.

Thanks for including me in the list, Matt… technically, I’m a step-father, but, for the most part, it’s all the same…

Being that I was adopted, and having a step-daughter myself, I tend to define “Mother, Father… Parent” by relationship and not by genealogy.
