Volvo Markets First Hybrid Bus: Volvo 7700

The engines can work in tandem or solo, much of the bus interior operations (doors, lights, etc) are powered by the rechargeable battery, and this is all powered by the parallel system named I-SAM. This includes the combined start motor, the motor, the diesel motor, and a combined control unit which work with Volvo’s I-Shift gearbox. The technology is significant due to its efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Volvo’s success with the efficiency gained in the 7700 is the fact that the components used for this project were developed by Volvo for this project. In the past the effort has been to use outside parts and incorporate them in existing platforms. By avoiding this technique Volvo has created a truly effective bus.

Funny how GM, Ford or Chrysler didn’t come up with something as slick as this first. I suppose it took European engineers and European corporate views to see the light and make real progress. I think I will encourage my daughter to send the grand-children to European schools, our boys’ greatest achievement, the latest one, is a 620 hp. 8 mpg, 230mph Corvette. They produced this “masterpiece of folly” just in time for the depression, in a country where the max. speed is 60 - 70 mph, at a time when gasoline costs over $4.00 a gallon! The shitheads! Is this what we sent them to school for??

Seattle has been operating GM hybrid buses since 2005 at least. New Flyer hybrid buses have been out for a while.
