Schimmel Art: Upcycled Bits Are Greater Than Their Sum
S A Schimmel Gold is an eco-conscientious artist that strives to create something from nothing. “Look closely for menu items, junk mail postcards, business cards, old greeting cards, cruise itineraries, gallery openings… stand back to view the sum of the parts - a textural representation of beauty.” Living by the old eco adage “creating not wasting” Schimmel has perfected the fine art of portraiture using upcycled “bits” to create colorful mosaics.
Typical mosaic construction incorporates pieces of colorful tile or glass finely arranged on a surface and secured with grout or lead in place (or many other materials). Schimmel saw the explosion of color in mundane articles such as junk mail and advertisements and saw an easy and free source of color to work with. She talks about the union of “Advertising images married with advertising’s images.” This is an astounding use of otherwise useless waste to create everlasting beauty that increase the value and quality of life for those able to enjoy her art. With an extensive body of work this artist brings a strong message that we can both create and grow while doing or job as earth’s stewards.

Printing images from an artist’s web site is copyright infringement. The artist owns the rights to the work, so printing them and giving them as gifts is theft… please purchase art from the artist.

I agree that the artist should be paid but I’d be interested to find out if Twiggy or the estate of Frank Sinatra were paid for the use of their images by the artist.
