Uhuru, like the Shakers, believe "beauty rests on utility." Their work aims towards sustainability, lasting appeal, and quality. The Bilge Lounge is a chair constructed from reclaimed bourbon barrels and the spring suspension leafs from used trucks. The barrels are used only once for aging, after being roasted to a brown hue to imbue flavor in the bourbon, in Bardstown Kentucky before they have reached the end of their life for this purpose. Uhuru's Kupe Line has put this wood to further good in the form of elegant and character rich furniture. Uhuru as a company works towards eliminating waste from their production methods and being acutely aware of reusable resources that can be locally procured.
