Drain Pipe Turned Hotel: DasPark Hotel

We’ve posted about hotels in the past but this one stands alone. I am sure we’ve all seen these enormous concrete drain pipes on the side of the road, sometimes abandoned and overgrown with grass. Dasparkhotel of Austria offers stays in these repurposed tubes for the adventurous traveler. Although you may feel like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sleeping in the sewer the accommodations are very private, supplied with 220V power, double bed, skylight window, decorative wall art, double door, storage space, and some peace and quiet. The main building located on the premises offers all other hotel amenities (including the bathroom!). Dasparkhotel is a cross between camping and a Capsule Hotel but with enough headroom to stand upright. Check out some other angles of this unique recycled hotel after the jump.

I would assume that the climate there is a steady 60-70 if not there might be some issues with heating and cooling. The overall idea is great, I would try one for a couple nights.

put a couple of them together for a house! This may be a way for the very poor to build modularly, as they can afford it they can add extra rooms - sans mortgage! I think a fella could build himself a fabulous summer cottage complex over the years this way. probably a solution to the mud and stick huts in Africa. The larger metal types might serve as well.

I would stay in something like that overnight if it wasn’t expensive but I couldn’t image staying in it for long unless you are out in the countryside with outdoor activities and a nice climate. It’s cool though and a good use of wasted materials.

Something like this for the homeless would be great. Better than staying under a bridge or worse.

Back in da olden days, some of the Home CD (Civil Defense) shelters were even larger galvanized (?) drainange pipes. Easy enough above ground, and you stand a pretty good change of being able to move and mod steel yourself. The concrete pipe might even be cheaper, but I don’t know what would be required to move/mod it.

The steel pipe was intended to be used as it was .. uh, intended: Dig a freakin’ big hole, role a freakin’ big pipe in the hole, add your floor, ventilation, wiring, plumbing, access (smaller pipe w/ ladder/stairs and cap headed to the surface), etc., then bulldoze the dirt back over it. Talk about claustrophobic.

Underground, the temperature was probably not the biggest problem. Below the frost line, it would be a pretty tolerable 65 degrees, pretty much year ’round. The bathrooms might be an issue… I don’t think they “did” composting toilets back then.

Above ground? I’d only worry about it rolling away while I was trying to sleep. With the proper joints, you could make a huge, tubular “X”. No way that would roll away, and you get 4-5 rooms with all that extra space.

They make oval/eliptical (cross section) drainage pipe from concrete… may be a good compromise.

Dang, now I have go look up concrete drainange pipe and see how much that stuff costs.

this is a really great idea, and nice execution, however i have to agree with shopped. Clearly this is a photoshop i can tell because of some of the pixels and having seen many shops in my day.

I’ve often wondered about the use of industrial structures for housing. Shipping containers are cheap and have always been my first pick. You could use these as portals from one to the other. Or closets. Or storage. Or architectural enhancements on top.

OK, now for some reason I am starting to have this weird yen to eat nuts and nest in cedar shavings…

Never mind.

who care’s if its ‘made’ up? so were tree houses, nomads, gypsies, covered wagons & tiny travel trailers.try a vacation for 3mo in such? so fun! H.FORD created moving vehcles thax to interior ‘pixles’. as a child we lived in 8′ x 40′ ‘mobil trailer’. that’s now a wkend RV! 2day,i own a “coach” in an ‘upscale’ park. just created the most beautiful ‘1 bdrm cotage’ from the 2 back rooms. sound proofed between all rooms (like music studio)..little ocean view..ful kitchen fit rite in the smaller closet..a real bdroom. even added garden windows & solar tubes. never felt hapier or more secure..Motivation? my better half & i ‘cracked in 1/2′. i rent out the beautiful, large & newly renovated front ‘apt’. this pays our entire mort. that’s nice recycling, if u can get it:). developed SERIOUS ILLNES FROM INDOOR POLLUTION here. so for the last 6 yrs all building materials chosen w/ thout to health AND RECYCLING OUR OWN JUNK!

For me to summer house!
Great idea! So simple and so clean design!
And who talk about climate? As I see its made of at least
20 cm thick concrete, andsupplied with 220V power.
And because this structure(not cube) became warm slower.
And dont afraid its not rolling so simple, because its weight,
Now Im going to draw mine pipes!

It does apear this is a real thing.
in their press page they refer to an article in db deutsche bauzeitung. This magizine is the oldest and best known German architectural trade magazine for architects and civil engineers.
I went to db’s web site and the article was published.
So as far as I can see without going to Austria its real not just photoshoped.
