Isn't chalkboard paint fun? A couple of coats of chalkboard paint can turn so many seemingly-useless items into functional, reusable items. You can make chalkboard paint craft projects that are practical for organizing or that are just plain fun!
While upcycling with chalkboard paint is great, the paint itself is not the greenest material. I haven't been able to find low- or zero-VOC chalkboard paint, but don't despair! It's not too difficult to make your own chalkboard paint. You can use pretty much any type of paint you want, which means when you make your own you're not stuck with the typical color choices: dark green or black.
Ready to make some chalkboard paint crafts of your own? Here are a few of our favorites from the vault!
1. Ugly Painting to Chalkboard Sign
Turn an old, gaudy picture frame into a modern chalkboard! You can use this as a sign for your booth at craft markets or in your house anywhere that you could use a place to jot down notes. This sign is hanging in our kitchen right now, and I use it to list the veggies our CSA sends each week, so I won't let things go bad in the produce drawer.
2. Chalkboard Glass Jars
This tutorial uses chalkboard spray paint instead of regular chalkboard paint. What a great way to turn reclaimed glass jars into organizational tools! The best part? You can wipe off the chalk and reuse these over and over as your needs change.
3. DIY Bead Board Chalkboard for Lists
If you can't write in a straight line to save your life, try turning some reclaimed bead board into a hanging chalkboard. Getting chalkboard paint into those nooks and crannies takes a little bit of work, but it's so worth it for the results.
4. Chalkboard Door Calendar
Turn a salvaged door into a reusable wall calendar with a little bit of chalkboard paint. So much better than a single-use, disposable calendar, isn't it?
5. Chalkboard Shelf with Hanging Hooks
Does your coat rack suffer from way too much clutter? A coat of chalkboard paint helps you keep everything in its place. You can change your labels with the seasons!
