Nope, that's no typo. This super cute, DIY statement necklace is made from beans, not beads!
OK, to be fair, there are some beads involved, too, but the bulk of the necklace uses painted black eyed peas.
Neon is super hip right now, but most of the neon jewelry out there is made from new plastic in far-away factories. Who needs all of that when you can create such a cool look with dried beans instead?
The necklace's backing is made from reclaimed plastic packaging, and you could make this an even greener project by using parts from thrift-store necklaces instead of buying your chain, beans, and findings all new. There are two materials that I'm not sure how you can green up:
- e6000 - This is the quinessential craft glue. It's strong, durable, and it dries clear. If anyone has a greener alternative to e6000, please share! I have been looking for one for years!
- spray paint - If you can find low-VOC neon spray paint, that's a much better option (Also, where did you find it?? I want some!). She also suggests painting your beans with nail polish, which is a much greener option, especially if you choose a non-toxic polish.
