What a great collection of uses for these beasts! There's no denying their character and vintage appeal... but as you rightly note, there's also no denying how cumbersome they can be compared to modern luggage. I once used an old Samsonite from the Salvation Army to haul musical gear when I was in bands, and it worked great: tough, and a good thief deterrent since it looked rather worn.
