A 220 MPG Green Sports Car
They keep getting better and better! Here’s another killer eco-friendly sports car. While this is still a concept, Hybrid Technologies has some pretty bold aspirations aiming to have a working prototype by this September and be on the market by lat 2009, early 2010. They plan to produce two models of this beauty, an all electric that will have a range of 150-180 miles, and a plug-in hybrid model that they are entering into the Progressive Automotive X-prize competition and will boast a 220 mile per gallon efficiency! The details on the specs of this Green super-car are scant. Popular Mechanics interviewed one of the engineers working on the project, Ron Cervan. When asked if this car would be able to match the Corvette ZR-1’s performance (638 Horses), Cervan laughed and told them they are “way out of the ballpark—it’s gonna be wild.â€

Although this sounds really cool, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. What we need is fuel efficient car that everyone can afford, not the super elite. We need something that can lessen the release of greenhouse gases and the best method of achieving that is to release technology that will reduce greenhouse gases to the general public, not just a handful of people who can afford this. Someone really needs to figure out a way to mass produce cheap fuel efficient vehicles. It is nice to know that it’s definitely possible, though.

Or better yet, come up with a device that fits into current vehicles that can reduce greenhouse gases.

True, but where do you think all the initial funding comes from? Get these ultra-hod rod electrics in the hands of the rich and affluent and the venture capital starts flowing. Then the real cars will arrive. Presenting the 2018 Chevy Testoteroni! Featuring the all-new, all electric….I got bored writing this. We need the supercars to make us feel good about that Camry we had to get for the kids.
BTW…They’ll be the first out with any kind of affordable all electric vehicle a la mass production. As always….
Hey - someone’s got to be first.

Great car, this is the reason average joe thinks greens are yuppie bull-shitters. Go for the top, the money won”t trickle down.

@SIR JORGE - Sorry about that, we added the captcha because we were getting several hundred spam comments a day… or we had one really enthusastic reader that wanted to tell us about his organic viagra business… Anyway, they were getting caught by the spam filter but so were legit comments and so we ended up having to go through hundreds of comments a day to try and find the legit ones and approve them.
Do you have a suggestion on how we can combat spam without the Captcha?

I think the idea is to generate market interest in these cars, build some funding and some excitement, and then let the technology trickle down to the everyman. May or may not work, I guess, but I think that’s what they’re going for.

Nick is on the right track. Many of my friends whom I try to educate the benefits of electric plug-in cars.. always assume that electric cars won’t have enough power or the performance will be bad. This car will help the mainstream public realize that electric does not equal weak power.

If you want to believe in “pie in the sky”, pick Eestor. If you believe them, they have the invention that will put all of us in electric cars in the very near future.

These guys are questionable. They usually build one mockup with fansatic specs on paper. Ask for a test drive. Or ride. Or ask to see a video of it running.
For the real deal, buy a Tesla Roadster. http://www.teslamotors.com
They too are super expensive (but 1/3 the price of equivalent 0-60 supercars)
But like your DVD player, cel phone and any early tech, the rich adopters are paying for development costs.
Here is their explanation: http://www.teslamotors.com/blog2/?p=8
You want a a cheap Green car right now buy a Zap, or Tango.

It’s a really fine looking car, and the fact that it’s also green is awesome. It won’t be anything I can afford, though. It would be nice if they could come up with something Electric for us working “poor” so that we don’t go bankrupt trying to keep gasoline in the tank. Couldn’t be soon enough for me or the environment.

Raser Technologies is in development with FEV to deliver a prototype plug in electric SUV size vehicle for a major US car maker. It will go 40 miles on an overnight charge and has a generator that will allow it to extend to 40 miles with the onboard generator running at 34MPG. ) to 60 is 8.8 seconds. This is a great step in automotive.

how appropriate, a gasoline-less car next to a water-less toilet ad.

Just another example of what America does NOT need.Just design a “green” car that everyday working american men and women can use., and knock off this “MINE IS BIGGER.FASTER THAN YOURS mentallity. In the process, END our dependence on oil, and send the arabs back to doing what they do best: scoop up camel poop.

Dear Peter Wormer,
I am assuming you are trying to be ironic because no one is that stupid. So, kudos to the funny comment.

The thing is, ideas like these inspire and excite people about eco-friendly products. It reminds me of outlandish fashions on the catwalk that trickle down, in less extreme and extravagant fashion, to mass retailers. The car is a core concept, part of a wave that finally seems to be sweeping our culture.

If this car is so green, why does it have four exhaust pipes?

Let the Arab Princes celebrate! Let the Uber-rich jump with glee! another toy on the market with impressive specs! As the (GRD) great republican depression sweeps the land, and the “Amero” is about to be declared legal tender on this continent, we have a huge winner! It can beat the Corvette! The now obsolete and “lingering a slow death in sales lots” champion of now bankrupt GM’s lunacy!
The American people will soon need a fast cheap Compressed Natural Gas or Diesel fueled hybrid plug in electric car to get to and from bus and train terminals and home. personal “Landcruisers” and “Sportscars” like other childish toys will have no place in the austere post GRD “New American Dream” nor will “McMansions” for “Barbie Girl” sex object only women. The GRD will bring about maturity to the once boyish American nation, and filling our stomachs will be first and foremost in our minds for a long time to come! If you want to make money in the U.S.A. You will have to build your product to meet the needs of the people, not the advertising myths. You will have to price it very low, so build it for $0.55 hour wages in China. It will have to last a long time, no annual cash cow model changes! the Post GRD America will be very short of cash! It will have to run super cheaply, Post GRD America will be mostly Solar powered once the OPEC countries want Euros on the barrel head for oil! Do not price your product in Ameros, they will soon be devalued by the same bunch of bastards that ruined the dollar, and remain only a token of a once mighty nation, much like the Presidential Seal.
