Biodegradable Shoes that Sprout Flowers

OAT Shoes in Red

Don't you just love green products? I don't mean eco-friendly products (though of course I love those, too), I mean actual green products. Ones that feature plants. Remember Postcarden? Or those tiny, wearable planters? Last week, I ran across another awesome product that's more than meets the eye: sneakers that you can plant!

The typical sneaker has a few years before it starts to wear down. If you're really good to your kicks, maybe you can extend that, even double it, but eventually sneakers outlive their usefulness in the shoe department. Sure, you can turn your old shoes into planters, but what if instead of planting flowers in the shoe, the shoes sprouted flowers? Sounds crazy, right?Oat Shoes

Well, not so crazy, it turns out. Oat Shoes, an Amsterdam-based company, has developed shoes that you can plant! According to the folks at Oat Shoes, their goal was to not only combine attractive style and biodegradable materials to produce sneakers that look good but also that:

...leave no mark on the environment when you throw them out. Bury them in the garden, woods or compost, water regularly and flowers will bloom from your old kicks!

How awesome! The line of biodegradable shoes will be available in Europe soon, with their full website launching on Monday. Right now the best way to keep up with Oat Shoes is through their Facebook page.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm anxiously awaiting these shoes' U.S. debut! Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Wow, what a great idea- I have questions…wonder how the fit is, and what the lifespan of the shoe is? And lastly do they spout in long periods of wet weather? ;-) (wink wink)
Can’t wait until the hit the US to check them out!

Wow, this is amazing! I would also wonder how durable the shoes were. Really cool to know that this type of thing can be made!
