Morsø Jernstøberi, a Danish company, makes beautiful cast iron woodstoves with an amazing commitment to design and the environment.

Coming in classic and contemporary styles, these striking stoves are made from 98% recycled material consisting of steel scrap (50%), returned and/or rejected cast iron stoves (35%) and recovered scrap from the cutting process (15%). All of this is re-smelted and cast into new efficient wood burning stoves that are engineered to burn hot and clean and reduce particulate pollution.

Currently 18 of their stoves are EPA certified wood stoves. To gain that certification, the stoves  have to meet particulate emissions limit of 7.5 grams per hour for non-catalytic wood stoves and 4.1 grams per hour for catalytic wood stoves (or 4.5 gph for non-catalytic and 2.5 gph for catalytic stoves in the State of WA).   Morso's stoves (all noncatalytic) range from 3.1 to 5.2 gph.

At first blush, many people don't consider burning wood as a very "green" way to heat your home but remember, wood is a renewable resource.  It also burns a lot cleaner than coal or oil, plus it probably doesn't have to travel as far to get to your home.  Depending on where you live you'll likely be able to find an uber-local source for your wood (maybe even your back yard).  Here in NH I'm able to find a number of places that harvest the wood, cut it, and sell it all within 10 miles of my house.

Energy Use:

They get 80% of their energy in their European operations from renewable sources : 69% from Wind, water and sun energy and 11% from Waste, bio fuel & bio gas.

In the US at their Portland, TN distribution center, 100% of the energy used comes from renewable sources: 80% wind power and 20% biogas from TVA: Green Power Switch.

Packaging:

All packaging is made from 100% recycled material and they are a member of Green Point, the organization behind the Green Dot system.

Besides their EPA certification, many of Morso's stoves also sport the NS (Norwegian Standard) 3058/3059 certification, the EN (European Standard) 13 240, and the Nordic Swan Eco-label.  Their website is even CO2 neutral!
