Whether we're talking paper towels or toilet paper, there's no question that recycled is better for the environment. There's no reason we should be cutting down ancient forests so that we can clean up spills or wipe our behinds.
When I saw an ad for Scott Naturals, I was pleased to see a big company jumping on the recycled paper bandwagon. Scott is a subsidiary of Kimberly Clark, a company notorious for the deforestation associated with their paper products. Check out their "Green Done Right" commercial:
Sounds great, right? Wrong. What the commercial doesn't mention is that the new line has only 40% recycled content. That means Kimberly Clark is still cutting down forests for well over half of the fiber in their "Naturals" line. That makes them hardly a green choice.
If you really want to do green right, shop for 100% recycled toilet paper and paper towels. Brands like Seventh Generation have been making 100% recycled paper products for years, and you can often find recycled store brands if you're trying to shop on a budget.
