Eco-Friendly Art & Decor - tranSglass Recycled Glass

image

tranSglass is a really cool recycled glass design project.  With the help of Aid to Artisans, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to artisans across the Globe, Artecnica collaborated with Guatemalan craftsmen to bring designers Emma Woffenden and Tord Boontje’s designs to the market.  These pieces combine old world craftsmanship with modern and sustainable design to create a beautiful and affordable art out of trash.

Each transGlass piece is made from discarded beer or wine bottles in Guatemala under fair trade manufacturing practices.  The vessels are given shape by cutting the bottles with a diamond saw, then sanding and polishing the edges.  A variety of decanters, vases, candle holders and tumblers in either a polished or a frosted/satin finish.  Since they are made from discarded bottles that vary in size and color you won’t get exactly what is pictured, but you will get a piece of art that is truly one of a kind for a mere $42.

The transGlass collection is now in the permanent collection at the MOMA, and has become one of Arstecnica’s best selling products.
